Towards a Circular Economy

Sustainability Work

We are a piece of the puzzle to promote the circular econonomy and material usage as well as decrease the amount of waste generated in the construction sector in the Nordics.

Our manufacuring makes a real difference by recycling/upcycling 100% of the product of about 4,000,000 kg composite packaging per year which would otherwise go a waste processing plant where a the majority of the material would have been incinerated.
Material recycling of this waste decreases CO2 emissions by 2700 tonnes per year.

Our products are also 100% recyclable without any waste, emissions or extra costs, since they can be made into new boards ar RECOMA in a circular solution. As our procuction grows, our ability to make a positive change in the circular economy grows with it and we can contribute to make the construction sector more sustainable.

We work towards all six of the EU taxonomy environmental objectives and several of the UN sustainable development goals.

Environmental benefits

Our products make a green and low in carbon dioxide alternative to traditional materials in the construction sector. Since manufacturing is made completely by renewable electricity it doesn’t generate any emissions. On the contrary, we save plastics from incineration and preserve cellulose with bound carbon dioxide in it. At the end of the product's life cycle it can be recycled to become new boards.

The american equivalent to our product was used among other things as roofing material on Tesla Gigafactory One in Nevada. This roof covers approximately 200,000 square meters, which means that around 2,000,000 kg of cartons was saved from incineration and the emissions that follows.

Upcycling

Most people see beverage cartons as disposable which only value lies in its ability to keep food fresh. We see potential beyond its original intended use and value in what it can contribute to in the construction sector.

By upcycling; creating something more valuable than the original product, we make boards for a variety of uses.

More than 400 packages are used in the production of one board, and every truckload with our products is equivalent to 300,000 composite packages that would otherwise end up in a waste plant.

Locally produced

Our product is 100% made in Sweden, while the majority of boards are imported. Despite a well-known wood industry more than half of wooden- and wood based boards are imported. The year 2017, 55 million square meters wood based boards were sold in Sweden but only 48% of these were produced in Sweden.

The result

Beverage cartons are usually very hard to recycle completely. Because of the aluminum- and plastic content they can’t be used to make new cartons without first going through a complicated and costly process. This recycling process uses large amounts of water to separate the fibres in the carton from the other material. The amount of fibres that is still usable is dried and used to make new paper, the process is repeated. The rest, plastic and aluminum included, is incinerated in so-called energy recycling to run the paper mills.

RECOMA uses these materials as well to make our boards even better; the plastic binds the pieces of carton and works as a waterproofing surface, while the reflective properties of the aluminum contribute to a higher insulation value in the board. This means that 100% of the waste in recycled in our process and no additives are needed. This also means that our product is made from 100% recycled material and is also 100% recyclable.

The result is a building material whose production does not require deforestation or mining of natural materials, no additives or chemicals, no water consumption, and no waste is generated. Only renewable electricity is needed, and the raw material that would otherwise have gone to incineration is used to create our sustainable product. The sustainable option, quite simply.
